i started with a blank library in Music (Itunes) and went to preferences and unchecked the option that allows Music (itunes) to organize your librarys info (songs, album, artists, etc.) and most importantly. You can use one of their examples to start with as well as search this forum for Swinsian to find. What i did was this, I use Swinsian for my music collection but only use Music (itunes) as a way to put my collection to my iphone, Ipad. And Swinsian also provides a direct interface to your music via Applescript. Then I used a wide variety of different apps on both macOS and iOS. Just a bit pricey compared to a Plex lifetime pass but you do get unlimited storage with Vox, so you don't have to worry about maintaining your own (but what the hell, I've already got more than 80TB and I'm always expanding). I used to use Vox, which is a great service no doubt about that.
